‘Technology - from Farm to Plate' invites students to explore the role that technology has on dairy farms, including food technologies and production.
This inquiry-based learning unit has a series of activities based on content descriptors from the Australian Curriculum for Year 3 and Year 4 Science & Design Technology learning areas.
Students will be guided through activities such as the simple process of making butter.
This inquiry unit aims to help teachers and students investigate and understand more about the Australian dairy industry and its use of technology to produce food that consumed in their everyday lives.
Teachers are provided with suggested learning experiences supporting investigation into:
- exploring pasteurisation as a food technology used to extend milk's shelf life and provide for health and food safety
- where dairy cows are raised and where milk is produced
- exploring the tools, equipment, procedures and systems used to produce dairy products
- exploring the knowledge, understandings and skills used by dairy farmers to create their product
Further activities are designed to internally motivate students to explore, make connections and analyse the importance of dairy in society. These are available on the Discover Dairy website in the Activity Ideas PDF resources.
